Lyons, France, was somewhat of an epicenter of playing cards production in the XV and XVI centuries.  This pattern is one produced for export to Fribourg, Switzerland. The fragment referenced had once been in the collection of Sylvia Mann, and probably dates to the late XVI century. These cards features what she described as “vivid purple” pigment.
