rouen

The pattern that appears on modern poker cards today is believed to originate in Rouen, a city northwest of Paris. Another pattern originates here, sometimes called "Rouen II." These cards feature dames with pinned up skirts, roi with greaves, and valets with long stockings. Unlike their sibling pattern, these court cards also bear names. Xylograph lines are based on an uncolored 1525-1550 sheet at the British Museum, while the stencil colors are based on a 1600-1615 sheet in Musée Français de la Carte à Jouer.
